Our Strong Little Man

As most of you already know or have heard, my daughter Brittany and her fiancé Matt's little boy Nolan has been battling bilateral retinoblastoma, a very rare form of eye cancer, since August 2016. At his routine 6th month check up his pediatrician realized there was something wrong with his eyes. From there we sought out specialists and eventually received the news no parent or grandparent wants to hear - that our precious little 6-month-old had cancerous tumors in both of his eyes. The doctors kept mentioning the very real possibility of eye removal, but we wanted to try everything possible for Nolan to retain his sight. The next steps were 6 rounds of chemotherapy, followed by 5 weeks of daily radiation. Through all of this Nolan has been an absolute trooper. His constant smile and happy demeanor has helped his parents and family remain positive. After hearing nothing but bad news for what seemed like the longest time we thought that we were finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. The tumors were shrinking, Nolan's sight was improving, our little boy was courageously fighting and everything pointed to the conclusion that he was winning. After completing the rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, our oncologist believed that this was all he needed for treatment. His first follow up had all the doctors extremely impressed, they even scheduled to have his chemo port surgically removed. We finally thought, "Wow, this is it; we did it... Nolan did it!"Then just after we finally thought this was all going to be a thing of the past, we got the news last week that the cancer had returned. And not only was there a relapse, but Nolan's oncologist said that the tumors are about the same size as when he was originally diagnosed. So here we are back at square one, faced with yet another battle. His team of doctors have told us Nolan's case is one of the most severe they have ever seen. Again, or what any parent wants to hear. They are now planning to take a new form of action with this next round of treatment. Instead of the chemo we did the first go-around, they want to do intra-arterial chemotherapy, which is a more aggressive form of treatment and will go directly into his eyes. We are praying that this next round will do the trick. Besides the chemo, Nolan will also need to undergo more radiation as well. With intra-arterial being a new form of chemotherapy, it is not offered at many places throughout the country so Brittany, Matt and Nolan will need to stay in Boston for an extended period of time until his treatments are complete. This will put a hardship on this young family as both parent will once again be forced to take leaves of absences from their respective jobs. The next couple of months will be very tough on them emotionally, physically, and especially financially. We hate to ask for help with this but the reality is we really need it. Any donations would be greatly appreciated. Please share this story with your friends and send positive vibes and prayers Nolan's way. God knows this family could surely use some good karma. We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for everything you all have done for Nolan and his family. God bless.
