In March 2017 Ludwig Sell and Kathy Slater experienced the most joyous, fulfilling moment in their lives - they welcomed sweet baby girl Lucia into this world. Baby Lucia was born prematurely at 35 weeks but has been thriving in the loving, happy family she was born into it.
Fast forward to four months later. Ludwig Sell and Kathy Slater just experienced the worst of the worst moment in anyone's life. They had to hear the words: Cancer. Rare Adenocarcinoma that spread to his omentum. It was a moment that has shaken them both to the core and will forever change their lives.
Background:
Ludwig had been experiencing abdominal pain and swelling since 2014 which has puzzled doctors. Sadly, 3 years after the initial complaints, imaging and a biopsy confirmed Ludwig has cancer all over his abdomen. It has spread from another point of origin (primary cancer origin unknown at this time, though they suspect a very rare appendix cancer). This was not something that new parents ever expected to hear during the joyful time of having a new baby. This was not something that a man who is the sole provider for his disabled mother, was ever prepared to hear.
After a cat scan and some additional tests, it is the doctor's recommendation that Ludwig and his family travel to NYC where Ludwig can undergo "The Mother of all Surgeries" (see link below) : a 15-hr procedure in which a doctor will remove a large mass from Ludwig's stomach, treat his entire abdominal cavity with heated liquid chemo (HIPEC) to try and clear out as much of the cancer as possible, and possibly remove his appendix and/or any other organs invaded by cancer. This is a very long, intensive surgery that will certainly take a major toll on Ludwig and his family.
As anyone who has experienced cancer knows, the physical and emotional strain of having to go through this disease or watching a loved one go through this disease is indescribable. While we can all give our support and love to Ludwig and Kathy during this time, we can also provide them with as much financial assistance as we can. No one should ever have to worry about money in a time like this, when life and death are hanging in the balance.
That is why we are setting up a GoFundMe fundraiser for Ludwig Sell and his precious family. ANY donation amount can make a huge difference in this family's life. As we know, insurance covers some things but definitely not everything. The dining room table of the Sell family is already stacked to the brim with medical bills and this is only the beginning.
