Relief Fund for Hollywood Support Staff

The entertainment organizations #PayUpHollywood, Scriptnotes Podcast and YEA! have teamed up to create the Hollywood Support Staff COVID-19 Relief Fund, aimed to assist LA-based support staffers affected by the COVID-19 shut downs.

In the last week, the entertainment industry has come to a near-complete standstill, threatening the financial security of hundreds, if not thousands. Many companies and productions are laying off or cutting hours for Assistants, PAs, Coordinators, Readers and other support staff. This is a massive loss of revenue for those who already weren't making a living wage. While unemployment benefits are being expedited, most support staff can't afford to pay rent and bills on the UEI max cap of $450/week; the situation is worse for support staff who were hired as 1099 employees and do not qualify for unemployment - these employees will have no income during this crisis and currently have no way to access federal relief.

We urge the studios and employers in the entertainment industry to continue compensating ALL their employees during this time of uncertainty. We know this is an expensive ask, but businesses profit because of the hard work of a company's employees. They need your financial protection and support now more than ever.

Unless and until Hollywood studios commit to compensating their support staff during production shut-downs,
this fundraiser will provide a modest one-time stipend to as many Los Angeles-based support staffers in need as we can support. We will be fulfilling requests for aid based on the order they are received and the urgency of the applicant's personal situation.

Our goal is to raise a minimum of $100,000.
We plan on providing stipends in the one-time amount of either $450 or $900. If we met our goal, we can provide stipends to 111-222 support staffers to help cover the cost of things like rent, utilities, student loans payments, etc. If we surpass our goal of $100,000, we can provide relief to additional support staffers in need.

Most of the affected support staffers worked in production, where they were given 60-hour work week guarantees; the current minimum wage in LA for employees at large companies  is $15/hour. The stipends being offered are equally to either one full week of pay at the rate of $15/hour for a 60-hour work week ($900), or one half week of pay at the rate of $15/hour for a 60-hour work week ($450).

Applicants can apply for one of two stipends:

- PARTIAL-WAGE LOSS: A one-time amount of  $450 will be given to applicants reporting partial-wage loss and facing financial hardship due to COVID-19 related shut downs (ex. an applicant who made $900/week previously but is now dependent on a $450/week unemployment benefit).

- TOTAL WAGE LOSS: A one-time amount of $900 will be given to applicants reporting total-wage loss and facing financial hardship due to COVID-19 related shut downs (ex. 1099 employees who do not qualify for EDD, new assistants who had their start dates pushed indefinitely, etc.).

To qualify for support, applicants who qualify for unemployment must first apply for unemployment benefits (check here ) before they can apply for relief from this fundraiser (1099 employees are exempt from this requirement). If you are a support staff member who is facing severe financial hardship due to COVID-19 related work stoppage, apply for relief here  .

These stipends will cover only a fraction of lost income, providing desperately needed relief to support staffers who are hurting from the shut downs. Again, we urge the studios and employers in the entertainment industry to continue compensating ALL their employees during this time of uncertainty. These shut downs will drive out talented artists who simply won’t be able to afford to stay in this industry; this fundraiser hopes to provide them with a lifeline so we can keep their voices and their potential where it belongs - here in Hollywood.

Please #SupportOurSupportStaffs, Hollywood’s next generation of artists and executives, during this crisis by encouraging studios to continue to pay their employees during the shut down and by contributing to this campaign.

THE NITTY GRITTY

100% of funds contributed will go directly to relief for out-of-work support staff; no overhead or administrative costs will be applied, as #PayUpHollywood remains an all-volunteer effort. The total amount distributed will depend on the amount donated in the coming weeks.

Donations to GoFundMe cannot be claimed as a tax write off.

For transparency purposes, we will provide records and receipts of distributed funds on request AFTER the campaign has closed. However, all personal, identifying information of applicants will be kept confidential. In the event that the campaign surpasses its goal and every qualified applicant has received a stipend, the remaining funds will be distributed evenly among the qualified applicants.

For full transparency, I, Liz Alper, will be withdrawing the funds raised on the GoFundMe and delivering the money to applicants with #PayUpHollywood, Scriptnotes Podcast and YEA!
