Rogers Wildlife Rehab Center is in desperate need of additional support to cover the intake of approximately 150 individual herons and egrets from the rookeries surrounding the DFW metroplex.
Every year the number of birds we take in exceeds the year before. In 2016, we rehabilitated nearly 4,000 sick, injured and baby birds. At this time of the year, caring for the extra 150 (expected to be 200 by the end of July) herons and egrets is a significant financial struggle for RWRC. This is an unexpected cost that we simply cannot turn our backs on.
As the weather gets hotter, more and more baby egrets and herons end up on the ground in need of rescue. Because many of the Rookeries in DFW are in urban areas, these poor birds struggle to find food and water and end up dehydrated, starving, and injured. We are currently receiving between three and twenty starved and injured baby egrets and herons a day, and each one is meticulously cared for.
These herons and egrets can't survive without us, and we can't save them without your help. With food, medical care, supplies, and custom built enclosures, the cost for each bird is roughly $2.50 per day. We will spend the next six weeks working tirelessly to get each bird ready for migration. This effort is expected to cost us over $10,000 for just these birds. Pictured below is what is needed to care for just one bird, with the food being just one day's worth of food.
