Hello! my name is Alton Pitre, a senior sociology and journalism major at Morehouse College from Los Angeles.
I was recently selected to participate in a study abroad fellowship program where students of the Atlanta University Center will travel to Liberia in mission to service the local communities.
Growing up in the Jungles, a gang ridden neighborhood located in South Central, Los Angeles, I was confined to my neighborhood due to many societal factors. Because of my affiliation, traveling beyond the vicinity of my neighborhood was oftentimes dangerous and life threatening. Hence, now that I have progressed from that lifestyle and its restrictions and have made it to college, I have made it my priority to take advantage of study abroad opportunities.
Traveling to the motherland has always been a goal of mine because Africa is a special to me. I believe it is necessary for me to visit to understand the true identity of myself and my culture. I am also very passionate about lending a hand to servicing communities so to be able to do so in Africa adds icing to the cake.
The total cost of the trip is $4,500. I have been fortunate to have received a journalism scholarship for $2,000 but am responsible for the remaining balance, vaccinations included. I humbly ask for your financial assistance to make this once in a lifetime trip possible. Any donation amount is greatly appreciated and would be contributing to a student's dream come true!
Much love and blessings,
