Crina's School Exchange

Crina is an amazing 17 year old who has been through so much in her life and still comes out smiling, strong, positive and keen to help others! She grew up in poverty, was orphaned at the age of 8 and then spent 15 months in an awful, Romanian childrens home.
Now, thanks to her determination and hardwork, she has been selected to study for 6 months in Finland which will be a fantastic opportunity for her! Crina lives in a small, poor village where she is surrounded by negative influences such as corruption, prostitution, alcoholism and domestic violence. The Romanian education system is one of the poorest in Europe so for her to spend 6 months in Finland, which has a highly acclaimed educational system, will be a life-changing experience for her.
Since 2009 Crina has lived with her new family, in Romania, as part of the charity Crosscause www.crosscause.ie . Crina regularly helps out wherever is needed; she loves doing activities with the special needs residents; workshops with the Day Centre children and helping out in community projects. As she says in her own words; "Helping those less fortunate reminds me of the period when I was in their situation and I was helped by others. I consider myself fortunate that I can now give back a little of that help. I get very upset when I see children suffering. I was just like them, I didn’t know how to defend myself, I didn’t know that is not normal for my parents to beat me. If I had the power I would save all these poor children, who suffer greatly, but maybe one day in future I will do something for them."
My name is Claire and for the last seven years I've been lucky enough to call myself Crina's mother. My husband, Ionel, and I both run the charity on a voluntary basis so we do not have the money to pay for this experience ourselves. I do not like asking for money but I would hate Crina to miss out on this opportunity just because of lack of funds. For every pound that is donated, Crina will repay by working in the charity! She is a very special person with huge potential and this experience would mean so much to her.
