and friends of Kirk D. Dawkins, Sr. are uniting to provide support in his
battle against Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).
At 60 years of age, Kirk Sr. had been a picture of health all of his adult life. In April 2013 he started feeling fatigued and had difficulty breathing. He reluctantly went to see a doctor and was immediately hospitalized. After several days of testing Kirk was given the diagnosis of AML and immediately started on a regimen of chemotherapy. He remained hospitalized until discharged in June with return visits twice a week. He has been hospitalized twice since June for high dose chemotherapy and will undergo another round of chemo in mid-August while awaiting a bone marrow transplant. Throughout this period Kirk has received 18 units of blood, 4 units of platelets, and undergone 7 bone marrow biopsies.
Kirk has been medically and physically unable to work since April and, due to the severity of his condition and care required Yvonne, his companion and wife of 40 years, has had to quit her job to become his caregiver. She stays at his bedside leaving only for brief periods to take care of personal business.
They are finally "empty nesters" with four adult children; two are currently in college. Kirk has always worked hard to support his family and his community. As a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) technician he sweats out summers on commercial roof tops and in residential attics so others can remain cool and comfortable. This year has been extremely difficult for him. In addition to the strain brought about by not having any income, his own a/c system at home is out and needs to be replaced.
Kirk and Yvonne would like to thank the many family members and friends who have provided prayers, labor and financial support during this difficult and unfortunate time.
