Makupula Library Project

Makupula Secondary School is building a library, and we need your help to make it happen! Collin Phillips and I are Fulbright English Teaching Assistants working in Stellenbosch, South Africa. We are working in collaboration with Makupula to build an on-campus library at their school. Makupula is located in Kayamandi, a township in the Western Cape of South Africa. The school is dedicated to educating 900 students from the community. As of now, the school does not have a library, and the only public library in the township is inaccessible to many of the students. The library is critical to helping students at Makupula gain greater access to knowledge, and will promote self-directed learning skills that can lead to long-term educational and professional success.

Thus far, the Makupula Library Project has successfully acquired enough books to start the library. However, the school is in desperate need of a library database system in order to catalog books, keep a record of books in the library, and keep track of students who are checking in and out books. A library database system is an important element of any functional library. Today, we are asking you to help us raise the funds to buy this program. As soon as the funds are raised, the students at Makupula will be able to have a fully functioning on campus library.

Any extra proceeds raised from this fundraising effort will go towards the following items:

Paint for decorating the library
Printer and scanner
Books in isiXhosa
Books in English
Furniture for the library
