My wife Catherine is an amazing woman. First and foremost, she is dedicated to raising our four boys into fine young men and is heavily involved in keeping up with their busy schedules, running them here and there. Her days are also filled with being a high school ESL teacher (with a master’s degree.) She does all this while being in a wheelchair.
Catherine had a blood clot on her spine when she was five years old and has been unable to walk since then. She does not let being in a wheelchair slow her down and was recognized for her strong and positive spirit by being crowned Ms. Wheelchair America in 2002.
Unfortunately, her paralysis is starting to take a toll, and she has had to have two major back surgeries in the last three years. The biggest factor in these issues is that she must use a manual wheelchair when she drives in the car. After transferring into the car she has to take the wheels off and lift them and the chair body over herself into the passenger seat. Then she has to repeat the process when she gets to where she is going. All of that twisting and lifting has contributed to broken rods in her back and degeneration of part of her spine.
It is necessary at this point in Catherine’s life to have a vehicle with a ramp where she could drive her wheelchair in, without transfers or disassembling and reassembling her chair.
The cost of a van with these capabilities is out of our financial reach. My goal would be that through your generosity, we could ease Catherine’s physical burdens and prevent future surgeries.
