Move Us To Get Medical Care

Four years ago in February James went to the ER suffering from flu like symptoms. After a short explanation of his symptoms, doctors ordered a ct scan revealing a cyst on the back ventrical of his brain that was blocking fluid from draining. An emergency surgery was performed to put a temporary external drain in his head to relieve the pressure. When the surgeon went in to do surgery he determined a permanent shunt would be necessary to adequately drain the fluid from around the cyst to his digestive system. Two brain surgeries later and a month in the ICU, he finally got to go home.
Fast forward three years, he goes back to the ER after about two weeks of being sick again and finds out that the shunt had punctured his intestine and became clogged and infected. The infections present included e.coli, turning his blood septic which caused his kidneys to fail and completely shut down for good. That resulted in him being on diaylsis that started in the hospital and has continued 3 times a week in center since then. He also had to have an external shunt placed since the internal had became infected which of course means another brain surgery. This stay ended up being a total of 3 brain surgeries, a hemodialysis chest catheter placement to start diaylsis, and another month gone in the hospital.
The kicker to all of this is the struggle to get insurance throughout the whole process. The costs of covering dialysis, prescriptions, doctors and the eventual transplant is astronomical. The only viable insurance option was and is state provided Medicare and disability.
While in the hospital an outreach group came to the room to gather information and we thought help us get the insurance application process started. They got the hospital paid and did nothing else to aid him in the nightmarish disability process.
It was April of this year before we realized they hadn't even filed his applications properly. So he got them removed from the case and decided to try to tackle this on his own.
To this day we still haven't seen a disability payment and because he is so young he didn't have the work credits to qualify for insurance. So we are still fighting for the benefits he is entitled to.
At the recommendation of his dialysis team including the social worker, we are moving to where Davita is based for the chance at immediately qualifying for health insurance and the better possibility of a transplant. Anything is appreciated in assisting getting our little family there!
