In May 2016, Armani, 12, was diagnosed with a very rare type of thyroid cancer called diffuse sclerosing papillary thyroid carcinoma (DSPC). She underwent two difficult surgeries in Sep and Nov 16 at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to fully remove her thyroid and several affected lymph nodes, followed by 4 weeks of testing and radioactive iodine (RAI) treatment. However, DSPC is aggressive and doesn’t always respond to treatment. Unfortunately, this is the case for Armani; new tumors have developed in many of the remaining lymph nodes in her neck.
Armani has an excellent team of pediatric specialists at John Hopkins, Baltimore, MD, who will now perform a 3rd surgery this summer and once she heals, she will undergo 8 weeks of Radiation Therapy and treatment to eradicate the cancer.
As you can imagine, having a young child battling a very serious illness has placed an enormous burden on the Raibon’s, both emotionally and financially.
To ease some of the financial burden would be an enormous blessing. The Family (Kelvin and Tonia and Armani’s two brothers) must secure housing near the hospital for her surgery and recovery (minimum of 10 days), and for the subsequent two months for the duration of her radiation treatments.
Additionally, Kelvin has exhausted all of his annual and sick leave from Armani's previous appointments, surgeries and treatments. He is projected to deplete most of the donated leave he's received from generous employees for her upcoming surgery and iodine treatments. Without leave, Kelvin faces significant loss of income.
Your generosity will allow the Raibon Family to let go of the stress and worry associated with financial burdens and to focus on what really matters- being there for Armani so she can heal and return to doing all the things she loves, to include competitive cheerleading!
Armani's short term goal is to beat this life threatening disease. Since battling this disease, she has gained an interest in the medical field and one of her long term goals is to become an anesthesiologist or an Otolaryngologist (ENT Doctor).
