Study Abroad for Global Health

Donation protected
My goal is to work in the public health industry focusing on health education issues that affect the global LGBT community. To that end, I'm a junior at Kent State University majoring in Public Health with a concentration is Global Health. This spring I am required to study in Geneva, Switzerland as part of my Global Health/Public Health major. I'll be interning at the World Health Organization under the Tobacco Free Initiative in Geneva.

All of the money raised will go to pay my tuition, room, board, and living expenses while I am in Switzerland. This includes the cost of my work visa and other fees associated with studying and working abroad. The cost estimate for studying in Geneva is here. The semester is going to cost about $20,000. I have some financial aid and a little family assistance, but this semester is going to be very tough to manage. If I could raise as much of the $20,000 as possible, it would ease the burden on my mom and me. My goal is to raise half of the costs, about $10,000.

Here's a little more about me in case you're wondering: I'm 20 years old and am from Northern Virginia. My mom raised me on her own and it's been tough financially sometimes, but she did her best and I always had what I needed, even if nice-to-haves were out of reach. I was in the color guard with the marching band all through high school. I played the cello in the school orchestra since 4th grade, and I'm also learning the guitar and the alto sax. I am playing the alto sax withe KSU Marching Golden Flashes this year after two years in the MGF Color Guard. I was president of the Gay-Straight Alliance at Fairfax High School for two years. I am a member of the Public Health Student Alliance and am a brother Kappa Kappa Psi, a music service fraternity. I also support Kent State's Face AIDS chapter.

I work at a water park during the summer to help pay my expenses and I've also been a volunteer member of the young adult staff of the Jeremiah Project. The Jeremiah Project is a charitable organization that helps middle school-aged youth rebuild homes in impoverished areas of the Shenandoah Valley.
