FREE filtered masks to fight against COVID-19

My name is Wayne Jones. I live in Anchorage, Alaska, with my family. My wife is a registered nurse who works in one of the Anchorage hospitals. Knowing our medical community and essential workers did not have proper PPE during this critical time, my wife and I designed and tested 0.3 micron-filtered masks, which are as close to N95 masks as possible, to help our community during COVID-19 pandemic. These masks are reusable, and with proper sanitization can be used for 30 days. Our dream was to provide FREE masks for everyone, so we used our savings to purchase filter, fabric, and elastic, and asked the Anchorage community to help us with sewing the masks. To give you an idea of the cost, we pay $30 per filter box which is cut into proper size for insertion into 23 masks. Our plea was answered by many volunteers from our community. My wife and I provide the volunteers with everything they need to sew masks, and arrange to drop off mask-making kits, as well as pick up masks and distribute them where they are needed.
As our dream became the dream of many more people, we started calling ourselves the “Anchorage Alaska Mask Makers.” Our community of more than 150 volunteer sewers, pattern cutters, delivery people, etc. have made and distributed over 14,000 filtered, reusable masks in less than one month. These masks have been given to medical professionals, first responders, frontline and essential workers, and at-risk individuals for FREE. We have delivered our masks to the Providence hospital, Regional hospital, ANMC, Satellite medical offices (doctor offices associated with hospitals), Southcentral Foundation, Blood Bank of Alaska, immune compromised individuals (due to chemo, diabetes, heart problem, surgery, etc.), Covenant House, Anchorage Police Department, Anchorage Fire Department, Anchorage Fracture and Orthopedic clinic, Katmai Oncology group, Alaska Cancer Treatment center, McLauglin Youth center, Functional Therapy of Alaska, Anchorage Neighborhood Health Center, Home Depot, CARRS, Anchorage Correction complex (jail), Foster Care group (foster parents and foster children), Anchorage Radiation Therapy center, Food Bank of Alaska, Anchorage Women’s Clinic, Anchorage Senior Center, Veterans Administration, Alaska Court system, Alaska Airlines flight attendants, Alaska Air transport, LaTouche Pediatrics, etc. to name a few, and we still have a long list of request to respond to and provide masks for.
Our family used its savings in fight against COVID-19, and at this point we find ourselves in need of your help and financial assistance to continue this community service. Our ultimate goal is to provide free, micron-filtered, and reusable masks not only to the medical professionals, first responders, frontline and essential workers, and at-risk individuals, but also to every individual in Anchorage community. Every dollar that is contributed to the GoFundMe will go towards purchase of filter, fabric, and elastic to make more masks in our fight against COVID-19.
