Short Summary
My name is Martina Buchal. I am a Czech-born, Sudbury-raised, Ottawa-ripened ambitious global citizen, activist and young leader looking to make a positive difference in this world. I was recently awarded the great privilege of being selected to represent Canada at the prestigious One Young World youth leadership summit, based on my capacity to affect positive change.
The summit will take place between October 2 and 5th, in Johannesburg, South Africa and will, with all included, cost a total of $7000 to attend.
As a recent self-funded graduate from a single-parent, low income household, I simply can not afford to cover the cost of the summit myself (though I wish I could). However, I simply could not give up the chance to attend this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that could lead to so much positive change.
So, I am humbly asking my community for support. Much like we invest in our athletes and budding scholars through sponsorship, chocolate bar and cookie sales drives, and scholarships I believe it is also important to invest in our young leaders who are out to change the world for the better.

PLEASE NOTE: THE DEADLINE TO CONFIRM ATTENDANCE AT THE SUMMIT IS FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 13. In order to confirm attendance, I must submit the entire cost of the conference (roughly $5100 with the currency conversion) so, time is of the essence :).
About the One Young World Summit
One Young World is a charity that stages an annual Summit, which gathers together the brightest young people from around the world, helping them make lasting connections to create positive change. Unlike any other event, One Young World gives young people the kind of media platform and forum ordinarily afforded only to the leaders of nations and corporations.
At the Summit, the most valuable young talent from global and national companies, NGOs, universities and other forward-thinking organisations are joined by world leaders; the One Young World Counsellors. The Summit line-up has included President Bill Clinton, Kofi Annan, Bob Geldof KBE, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Jamie Oliver, Unilever CEO Paul Polman and Barclays CEO Antony Jenkins. Delegates debate, formulate and share innovative solutions for the pressing issues the world faces. Following each Summit the attending delegates become One Young World Ambassadors and are charged to work on their own initiatives or drive change within their organisation. Ambassadors have gone on to have an impact on issues ranging from education, global business, health, human rights, sustainable development and transparency.
As you might understand, it is therefore a great honour to be invited to partake in this incredible opportunity and it is the perfect catalyst to really start making a big, global difference.
The Selection Process
Unlike many other candidates who were nominated and sponsored by a specific corporation, I applied on my own and was selected based on my merits to attend. I therefore do not have corporate sponsorship. I have been selected on the basis of my capacity for leadership, concern about global issues, ability to generate and articulate impactful ideas, teamwork and evidenced commitment to volunteering and extracurricular activities.
My Qualifications
I work to pay the bills in the Canadian Legal System as a court clerk, but most of my time is vested in volunteering and community service. Some projects I am currently working on include undergoing training in conflict resolution and peace building and volunteering with the Canadian International Institute of Applied Negotiation, working as an advocate, researcher, and learning from my superiors (some incredible and inspiring people, I might add!) I have been putting together the bits and pieces to set a foundation for becoming a facilitator of new approaches to conflict resolution and personal empowerment (which I see as strongly linked to creating a more peaceful world).
I realize that peace and conflict resolution start at a very basic grassroots or personal level. So, I'm creating a resource and education network to help empower people to realize they matter, that their actions affect others, and therefore, they CAN make a difference in the world around them in a positive manner. I call it theEMPOWEREDme, and I hope to launch it at the One Young World summit.
I am also highly involved with World Merit ( an international community of millennials working across the globe to create positive change)- particularly through the contest they organize called Your Big Year. Your Big Year is a competition that tests your leadership abilities and your true potential to make a difference in this world. It also links young talent to amazing opportunities. From a community of 60,000 I made it to the Top 120 - and now the final 12!! I will be competing for the #1 spot (a one-year global travel ambassadorship) in November.
