My dear friends, family and neighbors,
As many of you know, in 2005 I was diagnosed with a rare type of neuroendocrine cancer originating in my pancreas. When I was diagnosed, it had already metastasized to my liver. At the time, the only treatment was surgery. I underwent a radical surgery to remove my gallbladder, spleen, tail of pancreas, and right lobe of my liver. I suffered many complications from which I very nearly did not recover. My situation at the time was so dire that some doctors even called my recovery a miracle.
Since then I have had numerous other treatments to keep ahead of the disease, including additional surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapies. It was also during this time that I was able to give birth to my wonderful daughter. She is the light of my life and a miracle in her own right.
I have been able to do as well as I have due to the support, love, compassion and generosity of my family, friends, coworkers and neighbors. I have been humbled by the generosity and kindness of the people surrounding me.
Once again my treatment has reached a crossroads. According to my doctors, the best treatment for me now is one that has not yet been approved in the US but has been performed in Europe for 20 years. Since the treatment has not been approved, insurance will not cover it and I will need to raise the money myself to cover the travel and hospital stay.
All cancer treatment is expensive, but rare cancer treatment is often prohibitively so. I know so many who are struggling financially right now. I recognize how fortunate I am to even be given the opportunity to request financial assistance for treatment. I very humbly ask for contributions to my cancer treatment fund.
