Up with People! (2nd Semester)

Hi!

I'm in Denver, Colorado volunteering as a guitarist and Band Intern for a program that I have been touring with for the last 6 months called "Up with People". I traveled and performed in countries such as the United States, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Mexico. I not only performed, but I also volunteered in schools, homes for the aged, food banks, hospitals and children's activity centers as part of the education and community service program of Up with People.

Part of the community service program, are host families where every participant shares their experiences that they've had in the past and most importantly, their culture. In host families, I got to experience real culture, not the one in hotels where they try and fabricate lifestyles of a specific culture.

Up with People has impacted me to do more in my community, to say what I need to say and mean to say, and to be a "Global Citizen". One who is aware of cultures that exist around the world and is cautious on how he/she approaches different people from different cultures.

Within the show, I was selected to be one of the Sound Interns. During that time, I learned and experienced how it is to be in a team. A team that puts up and takes down a stage in a matter of hours. I learned leadership techniques and values from our Technical/Band Manager, Toño Gonzales such as celebrating when it's possible. For example, having a coffee in the middle of a regular show day where we just finished setting up the stage in a matter of 2 and a half hours. Also, appreciating the little things like giving 5 mins to the team to appreciate what they've done and playing a game to ease the stress.

In this Technical Team, we all have to be honest and open which means withholding information might lead to inefficiency and/or injuries.

Among other things, this program has improved my ability to socialize. In the start of the year, I had social awkwardness. In this box, I was so shy, couldn't speak right, didn't know when to speak and I was always alone and quiet. Through this program, I was able to get out of that box and have confidence to approach a stranger and become good friends with them. On the road, this has happened a lot of times because I switch host families every week so every monday, I had to remember the names of my new host family. I have learned to listen and hear out opinions and give my opinion as a suggestion not as "the right". I have learned patience while leading a team. Some people might need a little push in their common sense!

All this I can pass on to the next person. Whether it's in the Praise and Worship team in church or talking to a person I just met on the street, but to do this, I must travel again to establish what I've found in me. The last 6 months were about finding myself. I found "myself", but to bear that into my head I need to put into practice in an environment that deals with so many situations at once... and that's Up with People. I have another chance to do this! Up with People has asked me to travel again these next six months as a guitarist, but they are asking me to raise $3500 within the week. I would like to invite you to experience this adventure through me within these next few months, but to do so I need your support! I would like to ask if you are willing to invest in me $300 or less if it is possible?

Everybody has a dream. Thank you for supporting mine!
