Permaculture Demonstration Site

James Thiong'o from Laikipia, Kenya

“Over the last 12 months I've been volunteering in permaculture projects in Kenya and Uganda, I've also trained small scale farmers and primary school students on growing their own food through permaculture techniques. I've decided to set up a permaculture demonstration site back home in Laikipia so that farmers from all over can come and learn permaculture to improve their living standards. Agriculture is the main economic activity in the Kenya and Laikipia regions. However, due to climate change, weather patterns have changed and we now receive less rainfall. Secondly, due to the continuous use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, soil fertility has been reduced. The result is smaller crop harvests which leads to farmers earning less income. Hence they cannot afford to pay school fees for their children, pay for medical care and last but not least their health continues to deteriorate as they cannot afford to buy fruits and vegetables (they only grow cash crops i.e maize and wheat). Through permaculture farmers will learn to integrate fruits and vegetables among their crops, make compost and organic fertilizers, and this will result in them enjoying organic fruits and vegetables from their own gardens and earning much more from their cash crops while making a positive impact on the environment.”

With your help we can make this world a much better place by ensuring the health and happiness of our fellow man. Thank you for any and all help that you can give to this project.
