My name is Genia Voitsekhovskaya and I'm a graduate student perusing a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing focusing on the poetry genre at Augsburg University in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I originally began the journey of furthering my education in July 2014 and completed two semesters before making the difficult but necessary decision to take a hiatus from my studies in order to attempt to improve my financial situation by picking up hours at my part time position as an usher. However, despite my goal-oriented personality, covering school expenses in a timely manner proved to be more difficult than expected being employed for an average of twenty hours a week for an hourly wage of under $10.00, especially after taxes. Prior to deciding to flourish my passion for writing, I graduated from Augsburg College with a Bachelors degree in Mass Communications with an emphasis in Creative Writing. I discovered my desire to take my creative talent further through taking various writing classes and experimenting with genres such as fiction, short story, and essay hitting a wall with all of them.
One of the main reasons I started this campaign is because I am not eligible for any type of financial aid at this time. This is because I applied to have my undergraduate student loans forgiven due to total and permanent physical disability, (Cerebral Palsy). After jumping through many hoops with doctor's verifications, filing errors, etc, I finally got $15,000+ forgiven. However, one of the conditions of the loan discharge is that I don't take out any loans or receive financial aid for a period of three years. Despite the absence of this type of financial assistance, I am determined to put forth all necessary efforts to obtain my MFA and be a great success with poetry outside of Augsburg College.
These funds will help me cover the remaining costs of my Masters program and hopefully decrease the chances of me being in deep debt at the conclusion of my time as a student. This assistance would allow me to put all of my energy and attention into becoming a poet who educates through the process of bringing experiences and life lessons to paper with words that will hopefully appeal to the eyes, ears, and other various senses of those who come across them. I plan to use my creativity and acquired knowledge from the program to work in the publishing industry, using my knowledge to help all types of writers get their creative and powerful words out to audiences with varying degrees of interest and understanding of this form of expression, but I need to achieve my personal and educational goals before I can run further with creativity.
My goal is to resume my studies this summer and complete the program by Spring 2018. Currently I am a part time student in the home stretch of my program after a 4+ year journey. I am in my second to last semester of the program, with two courses remaining at 6 credits each, so I wanted to update the numbers to reflect that. These current numbers are approximate:
Appropriate Remaining Program Costs
Fall 2018 $3,300
Spring 2018 $3,300
Total $6,600
I will be eternally grateful for any support you can provide. I intend to use my gift and education wisely to become the best poet I can be.
With Much Gratitude,
Genia
