Sherman is Going to College

My name is Sherman Stacey and I am a first generation college student that will be attending Chico State University in the fall. I am a six foot five African American male (I know what you're thinking, the answer is no, I don't play basketball) that finds the bright side out of every situation. Recently I've found my purpose in life. And that is why I am deciding to go to college.
While in High School, I took on many leadership roles in my school and community by advocating for a bond measure to improve the facilities of the schools in my neighborhood, which passed for $90 million dollars, I have helped organize and present a team research paper in front of working professionals and field researchers in several conferences in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Canada endorsing practices to close the digital gap between Teachers and Students in low-income communities. Furthermore, after a vigorous process, I became the Kappa League Junior Fraternity President with 40 high school students under my leadership. In the Powerful Health Peer Leadership Program, I participated and organized health workshops for the middle school students from John Muir in South Los Angeles to improve the health conditions of inner-city youth.
I plan on pursuing and receiving my doctoral degree in Psychology so that I can help students with learning disabilities like myself. Apparently, I suffer from a processing disorder. I was not sure how to deal with this learning disability. No matter how well I felt I did in the class the test scores would prove otherwise. I was being measured to those test scores. And because of it I hardly participated in class or freely expressed myself at school because I felt inadequate. I felt numb. I felt disabled.
After sometime, I decided that I had to do something about this. I was tired of feeling like a victim. I was allowing myself to cheat myself out of an education because of my condition. It was then that I promised myself that I would not allow this disability to hinder me from accomplishing my dreams. So I took an initiative to apply myself in school regardless of the challenges.
Apparently challenges come in all forms and never stop. Recently, I have been moving from place to place because of my mother's financial problems. I considered not going college to help support my mother, but when my mother found out about this, she responded, "No you're going to college to show the world no matter what the obstacle is, you can achieve. Anything is possible, you just have to put your soul into it." This changed my decision. So here I am.
I want to go to college but I do need some financial assistance for the simple things like school supplies, books, clothes (especially winter clothes), desk lamp, personal hygiene products, and so forth. If anyone can assist me in any way possible I will greatly appreciate it. And I will be sure to repay you with my degree. Thanks.
