As many of you may know, Jeremy Sammons was in a bad dirtbike accidnet on Sunday Oct. 1, while racing in an enduro dirtbike event. He was life flighted to UNMC due to not being able to feel and move anything in his legs and arms.
He was diagnosed with a C3 Transverse Process Fracture, with edema and brusing around the C3 as well, which is pushing on the spinal cord. He also was diagnosed with Central Cord Syndrome, compression fractures of T4,  T5, and the Lumbar2.
He began to regain feeling again in his legs and feet upon being admitted into UNMC SICU.
He currently can feel every part of his body but has not regained movement in his arms, hands, wrists or fingers. He is expierencing a lot of nerve pain in both of his uppper arms and shoulders. An example of how bad this pain level is= if you barely touch his arms with your finger he is in excruciating pain, he says it's like rubbing an open wound at all times.
Treatment at this time is visiting with an orthopedic surgeon to have the C3 fused to C4 in order to stabalize his neck. They are also looking at possibly trying to relieve pressure on the spine to help with the pain.

On Monday Oct. 2 Jeremy did not sleep well last night, they discussed giving him a type of nuero medication instead of the narcotics to help with the pain he had been discribing in his arms and shoulder areas. They wanted to begin physical therapy today to help with the cenrtal cord syndrome and try to get the range of motion back in all arms, legs, hands, wrists and fingers. Upon sittting him up in bed his heart stopped, they initiated a code, as they were lying him back in bed his heart started up again on its own, they did not need to do CPR on him. They said it was due to the swelling and pressure that was placed on the spinal cord and trying to do too much too soon. The rest of the day was spent lying back in bed. By supper time he was feeling well enough to eat. They began the nerve pain mediation tonight and after the second dose he was able to rest for about an hour. During the night they gave him a sleeping pill, which helped him sleep for periods of about 30-45 minutes before needing to be respositioned due to pain.

On Tuesday Oct. 3 Jeremy started having more intensified pain in the arms and shoulder areas. They began a higher dose of the neuro medication . This moring they wanted to try the physical therapy again, Goals for the day are sitting straight up for most of the day and pain control. The physical therapist came in and she and the nurse slowly began a few exercises to get the blood moving. They were able to get him to sit straight up in his bed and actually stand with assistnace for a few minutes. He did get dizzy a few times but did very well. After being able to sit for a period of time with out his heart stopping they took him down to x-ray again.  At this point he is still in a lot of pain and not able to move both wrists, the right arm or the fingers.
We just found out that surgery to fuse C3 to C4 will be on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. They will be using cadaver bone to replace the disk. He will be placed on an antibiotic before and after surgery. He will continue to wear the collar for 6 weeks. As of right now after surgery when he is released from the hospital he will be transfered to an acute rehab facility for intense therapy of the spinal cord. He will eventually be able to walk and hopefully gain some use of his hands and fingers.

But during all of this he and I will not be able to work, he needs to have someone with him at all times for awhile, So we will be in need of assistance even after insurance has paid for thier portion of the medical and rehabilitation expenses. Any donations will be greatly appreciated. We thank you for all prayers.
