Van with a ramp so Julian can GO places

How lucky are we to have so many wonderful friends! Julian has that effect on people. His sweet, sincere smile draws people into his world. Thank you, everyone, for your kindness. We can almost feel the wind in our hair as we cruise around town in a nice van!

Julian is my 31 year old son who lives at home with me, his mom. He has severe quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy, and spends his days in a wheelchair. His dad passed away in 1996, and left us a small life insurance policy, which I used to buy a van with a lift and put a down payment on a small home that is wheelchair accessible. But of course, as is always the case, that van eventually stopped running, and it was too expensive to fix. We have been without a van of our own for nearly 3 years now. We are only able to get around on the PACE ADA Paratransit busses, which run a limited number of hours and only in certain areas. When we go to visit relatives, I must rent a handicapped van for $175 per day. Sometimes, we aren't able to attend family functions due to the expense. You can see we need a van of our own. Julian is a bright young man who is trapped in his body. He loves to go to movies and out in the community. Really, anything he can do with his mom makes him so happy.
Julian is a fantastic guy to live with, really cheerful and funny, but life isn't always easy. It is expensive to care for him, and I am unable to work at a full time job. I get paid by the State of Illinois to be his personal assistant. It is a job that doesn't pay very well, but we have that and Social Security. A van is simply not in the budget.
We don't need a new van. We need a reliable van.
I would be so happy to be able to take Julian out in the community again. His life is so limited due to his physical handicaps. With a van to get us around, he could engage in the world more, and his life would be so enriched. As his mother, the center of his universe, I would give anything to be able to provide him with a wider world to live in.
