Barbi's Story:
What started as a simple back ache and some abdominal pain has become a life changing event. This initial pain led to treatment for an infection. But the pain continued to worsen. Blood work and a CAT Scan followed and a surreal diagnosis from the doctor telling me that I have Stage 4 Metastatic Colon Cancer. This is one of those things that happen to other people and suddenly I find that I’m the “other people”. A PET/CT Scan has followed the CAT Scan and I am having a Chemo Port inserted in my chest. This all seems so unreal and when I told my story, I sounded like I was describing someone else. Now the pain and fear of facing multiple Chemo treatments for Metastatic Colon Cancer has finally hit home. As a small business owner, I selected an insurance plan which I could afford, but now discover, in addition to this burden, I have been told by my insurance carrier that the treatment will not be covered.
I am surrounded by a loving and caring family, but we are not in a position to meet the financial challenges of this treatment. While the hospital and hopefully doctors; are willing to adopt a payment schedule for this major expense, it is difficult if not impossible to focus on healing while facing a precarious financial burden. As a member of a Rotary Club and board member of Micah’s Place I have seen how through the combined efforts and donations of many, a difference can be made in the lives of others. Now I hope you will see this opportunity to help me as a way of demonstrating the power of a caring community. I will be forever grateful for your contribution and dedicated to paying it forward when my health is restored.
