Bring Ekari to Life!

Donation protected

Ekari is an 8-year old Malawian girl who travels to all 54 countries in Africa with her mother (a journalist) and teaches readers (7-9 years old) about the diverse people, cultures, food, and history on the African continent. Each country is represented through a 20-page picture book.

The Ekari educational book series is a literary project under "PenAfrica," a pan-African organization promoting African literature and literacy. The organization aims to promote African literature, increase its readership, and ensure that young Africans with a passion for writing do just that. This is PenAfrica's effort to add to the literary database that exists, and help children all over the world, especially young Africans, to read the stories of the experience of growing up in different countries in Africa. Also, the project hopes to help children challenge the stereotypes and preconceptions that exist about Africa's different countries, and the continent as a whole. In addition to this, is the hope that the Ekari book series will be a fresh, fun means through which children all over the world will learn about the beautifully diverse culture Africa has.

Much like African children have been able to learn, through books, about various cultures around the world apart from their own, PenAfrica believes Africa's children should be able to read their own stories. Also, the world's children should be able to learn, through books, about Africa. In short, PenAfrica feels that it's high time the world's children Read Africa!
