Please help KGSA Foundation raise $49,740 for 130 girls in Kibera in grades 9 to 12 that are unable to afford high school.

Who are we?

The KGSA Foundation provides financial and technical assistance to support the Kibera Girls Soccer Academy, a free high school for girls in the Kibera slum of Nairobi, Kenya. KGSA works to advance girls education in the following ways:

High School Education: KGSA provides free secondary education to 130 girls annually. The school emphasizes leadership and character development through extracurricular activities and employs university trained teachers, setting it apart from other schools in the community.

Youth Development: KGSA started as a girls' soccer team and continues to champion the importance of sports and extracurricular activities. The school's afterschool program includes girls' soccer and journalism, debate, drama, cooking, computer, and business clubs.

Health and Wellness: Students need healthy minds and bodies. KGSA provides a daily lunch and partners with a local health clinic and other organizations to provide students with primary healthcare and feminine hygiene products. We have a social worker to provide counseling and mental health support to the students. Additionally, we are building a dormitory which will allow up to 80 students to live in a safe and stable environment with three meals a day.

Post-Secondary Education: KGSA has sent top-performing students to university. Within the next five years, we plan to send ALL graduates onto higher education or vocational training so that they can become financially independent women who are able to provide for themselves and their families.

Community Development: KGSA works to benefit the families of our students, KGSA graduates, and the broader Kibera community. We have helped graduates and teachers go to university, piloted a microfinance program for women, and support girls' soccer in the community. The main floor of our dormitory will co-function as a community center to hold community events and meetings.

What are we doing?

KGSA is seeking $49,740 to pilot a program to introduce safe and stable on-campus living for 40 students at KGSA for one year. The Kibera Girls Soccer Academy is a sanctuary and a safe place for girls. When the school was first started, students would often stay at KGSA late into the evening. KGSA’s founder, Abdul Kassim, told the girls that they really shouldn’t be staying at school so late because it was not safe for them to walk home after dark. He asked the girls to help him find a solution for this challenge. The students suggested that he rent a small room next to the school that they could live in. Abdul brought the idea to the KGSA Foundation and that is where the dream of a dormitory at KGSA began. In February 2015, 26 individuals climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, and each raised $10,000 to help fund the construction of the dormitory. Over the past five years, the foundation has raised over $400,000 to fund the construction of the dormitory. In February 2020, we officially broke ground on the dormitory and construction is expected to be completed in 2020. View the groundbreaking video here .

Why this Project Matters?

Though KGSA is a safe space for students during the day, many students face challenging home lives. The homes in Kibera are often overcrowded with families of up to six people sharing one or two rooms in homes made of mud and iron sheets that lack running water and toilet facilities. In Kenya, girls bear the burden of housework, which includes cooking over a charcoal stove, fetching water, hand washing clothes and dishes, cleaning the home, and caring for younger siblings. This leaves little time for students to study outside of school. Additionally, many of KGSA’s students face hunger, and abuse at home. We believe that providing students with three meals a day and a safe and stable place to sleep at night will improve their physical and emotional wellbeing as well as their academic performance.
