MandaLao Elephant Conservation

While elephants in captivity may be unaware of the global pandemic many are suffering from the lack of tourism and the revenue it generates to care for them. This care includes access to food and water, proper veterinary assistance and salary for the mahouts who work with them. It's been over a year since MandaLao has seen international visitors and while our elephants are still happy, safe and healthy (minus the amount of sweet treats they received before) we can only provide for them for so long without support. With the future still so unclear we are asking for your help. Any donation makes a difference. We owe it to the elephants to give them the best lives possible and the best way we can do this is together. Your donations will go directly to the day to day care of the 5 elephants at Mandalao. These costs include, but are not limited to.

Elephant Food: We feed approximately 200kg of food daily to each of our elephants, at a cost of more than $450 per elephant each month. Their diet consists of Napier grass, kem grass, banana trees, pineapple bottoms, sugar cane, and corn in addition to what they eat in the jungle. Without the income necessary to cover costs for elephant food and care, MandaLao and its elephants are in a dangerous situation. Food costs for our 5 elephants is between $2000 and $3000 per month.

Mahouts: MandaLao employs 6 mahouts and an elephant welfare manager, who ensures our elephants are being looked after in the most ethical way possible. 

Veterinary Care: Since the opening of MandaLao, elephant well-being has been our first priority. One of the most critical aspects of this is providing the veterinary care elephants need by trained and accredited professionals.

Feeding Grounds: In the absence of living in the wild, captive elephants need access to natural feeding grounds. MandaLao will renew the most essential land rental contracts to ensure our elephants have access to these grounds in addition to the food that we buy from local farmers.
