MVP Student Resistance Trip

As students and environmental activists in Virginia, we are concerned about the world we are about to inherit. All around us are the facts and figures that point towards a precarious future, yet we watch as existing, unsustainable power structures continues to be established. Natural gas infrastructure is growing at a rate that to some might seem unstoppable. However, as students, we see it as a necessary battle in our fight to protect the environment and the people that live in it. Natural gas infrastructure will put our communities in constant danger of contaminated water, earthquakes, and explosions. We want to use this trip to uplift the voices in our communities being silenced by the natural gas companies. As students, we feel it is important to stand in solidarity, and this mission led to the creation of the Mountain Valley Pipeline Resistance Road Trip.

This May 15-21, students from all across Virginia will be driving along the proposed route of the pipeline to see the effects of natural gas infrastructure first hand and to get to know the people it will be impacting. We have reached out to each individual community and together have planned actions that best suit each locale. So far, these include tours of fracking sites, rallies, documentary screenings, art projects, and community potlucks. With the help of some media strategy and potential appearances by local politicians, our impact will reach much farther than the immediate communities we visit.
