On May 30 2013, Laura was diagnosed with an extremely rare and aggressive cancer "“ a mucosal melanoma of the cervix. There are less than 100 cases worldwide. Ten days after diagnosis, it had already spread.
The top doctor in this field told Laura that conventional treatments simply don't work for this type of cancer. "˜Go home,' he said. "˜Enjoy what time you have left.' We appreciated the doctor's honesty. It confirmed the research we had done reviewing the medical literature.
We're devastated and in shock. We love each other so very much. We are soul mates. We found each other in mid-life and can't bear to be torn apart this way. But we aren't giving up hope.
Our research has led us to the Gerson Institute, which has an amazing track record curing melanoma patients. The Gerson method has been used for over 70 years and the technique is now being used by conventional doctors in Japan and in Holland. Six former Gerson patients talked to Laura last week about their recovery. One woman had the exact same rare cervical melanoma. Now she has been disease-free for 17 years!
We've created this fund so that Laura can attend the Gerson Clinic for 3 weeks and to cover the huge costs associated with doing the Gerson Technique at home for 2 years afterwards. None of these costs are covered by insurance.
The technique is an intensive juice diet and detox. Patients need freshly made raw vegetable juices every hour for 13 hours a day, plus special injections, nutritional supplements, 5 enemas and 3 vegetarian meals a day "“ 7 days a week for 2 years. Laura and I will need to be off work to do this and are hoping to have at least 1 paid home help to take over during the 16 hour (6am-10pm) days. This is a daunting prospect, but we believe the Gerson method works - and we can do it!
Laura is an incredibly strong and positive woman. She is also a wonderful friend, passionate animal lover and a uniquely gifted artist. Her photographs, collected by 4 museums in New York, capture the dignity and humanity of every subject she takes. Her own humanity is at stake now. We need to move fast to beat this aggressive cancer. But know that we are determined to succeed not only for Laura, but to give hope to others suffering from this insidious cancer.
