Jose Balderama Memorial Scholarship

Hello All! My name is Ramsey Garcia, I am currently part of the Theta Alumni Professional Association (TAPA) at CSU Chico, which is a Non-Profit dedicated in assisting 1st generation college students pursue higher education. To this end, I have decided to run the Sacramento International Marathon which will be held Sunday, December 3, 2017 to raise funds for the Jose Balderama Memorial Scholarship.
The late Jose Balderama lived a humble life. Jose was an academic advisor at CSU Chico and a proud veteran. He was committed to education, especially the advancement in education for Latinos on the CSU, Chico campus. Jose Balderama was a mentor, advisor, and a father figure to many CSU, Chico alumni. Although he is no longer with us, his spirit and, “Stay Focused. Be Happy.” philosophy lives on.
Pictured above is Luis Tiznado, who became the first recipient of the Jose Balderama Memorial Scholarship in Spring 17. Pictured with him are Jose Balderama's family. Luis exemplifies what it means to be a recipient of this scholarship. He maintained a 3.2 cummilitive GPA, was active within the University's student body and the surrounding community. All contributions made will be donated to the Jose Balderama Memorial Scholarship.
I am the product of a hardworking mother, loving family, and support of people who belived in my educational dreams. Getting to college is just part of the battle for many 1st generation college students. Only half of the latino's enrolled in a four year univeristy will graduate. We all face various hardships and one of the most prominent is the lack of adequate financial support. I found myself working 50+ hours a weeks to keep up with all my expenses both in school and at home. Time that could have been spent studying at reasonable hours and not having to stay up all night. I was fortunate enough to have a strong network of mentors whom guided me to my ultimate goal of graduating with my Bachelors Degree in Science with an emphasis in Accounting & Finance. Not too many have the guidance I received and for this reason I am running this marathon!
