Jesse + Autism + You= Therapy Dog

When Jesse was 3, he was diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum and with Sensory Processing Disorder. He has worked through OT, speech, social, and learning issues. He has bravely struggled with reading and has finally this year (age 8) started reading at a 2nd grade level. As many of you know, Jesse cannot sense pain in the same way most people can. He often injures himself and is not even aware of this. He also is prone to severe mood changes, anxiety, depression, and social awkwardness. We realized that our rescued doberman "Dahlia" might be able to help these issues. In 2008, we moved to New York for seminary with our newly rescued and trained Doberman "Dahlia." The bond that developed between Jesse and Dahlia has been incredible and life changing. Dahlia is Jesse's rock, comfort, and teacher. She calms him when no one else can, and she knows him with an amazing instinct for what he is feeling. Jesse is always cuddling with Dahlia, and we are all in love with Dahlia and her heart for this family. This past year has been difficult. Jesse was diagnosed with Severe Asthma and had his tonsils removed. But worse, Dahlia has developed crippling arthritis and joint/spine issues. Sadly, we have discussed with Jesse the need for Dahlia to retire (upon which Jesse was devastated). We do not know for how long Dahlia will be with us, but after much thought and prayer, we are seeking a new pup that Dahlia can "teach and tell all of Jesse's secrets and needs too," before Dahlia goes to Heaven. After much research we have settled on a Newfoundland, as they are sweet, calm, large enough to not get hurt by Jesse, and also known for water rescue (Jesse LOVES swimming). Please consider helping bring Jesse his new lifelong companion and helper and giving Dahlia peace at the end of her journey knowing Jesse is in good "paws."
