Give Hillary a Home!

Donation protected
While traveling in Cusco, Peru my friend Laura and I met and are spending some time with a young, stray female dog we have named Hillary. Although we originally wanted to take Hillary to a Peruvian animal shelter to get her off the streets, we soon realized that they do not exist.

Hillary is frighteningly skinny and her coat is dirty and thin. Because her situation is so obviously hopeless, we have decided to try and bring Hillary home with us back to the USA.

We are traveling back to Chicago on June 26th, and ideally eill be able to get her on a flight at the same time. We will take her to vet on the 24th and hopefully book her flight the same day.

The most important part of this journey, sending her via plane, is the part we need help with. Since Laura and I both graduated from college only a month ago and do not have jobs, yet, it would be difficult to fund veterinary and transport costs alone.

After speaking with various airlines, we have come up with a cost estimate of approximately $900 to transport her from Cusco to Lima, and then Lima to Chicago.

These costs include the actual shipment costs, customs fees, handling fees, and other miscellaneous airline costs as well as some of the costs associated with necessary veterinary care in Cusco.

All donations will go towards helping to pay for the transport of Hillary back to the US. Any additional funds will be donated to a local animal shelter.

More about Hillary . . .

After finding her wandering around the main square in the town begging for scraps of food from McDonald´s and KFC patrons, we stopped to give her some food and play with her.

We were the only ones who fed her over the hour span we spent watching her, even though she sat patiently at the door, waiting for customers to throw her pieces of food. When we got closer, we saw that she was so skinny her ribs stuck out starkly, and her waist was frighteningly tiny.

Although there are many stray dogs in Peru, very few were as skinny and malnourished as Hillary appeared to be.

We were surprised by how gentle and friendly she was to us when we spent time with her. She came right up to us wagging her tail, and was even allowing us to pet her and feed her directly from our hands.

Later, we learned that Hillary may also be nursing a young litter of puppies. Though it is possible that none have survived, or are missing, we plan to determine whether or not she is still caring for any puppies.

If any puppies are found, we will also attempt to transport them back to the US.
