Please help Tyler...Within a period of less than 2 weeks, Tyler went from a happy, healthy, active and VERY social little 8-yr-old boy that loved to play baseball, basketball, Tae-Kwando, ... to a comatose little angel clinging to life...with a bite from a tick!
Tyler is suffering from ongoing complications from Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. The infection spread throughout his entire body including his brain. Because of this he has a secondary diagnosis of Encephalitis, which is a swelling of the brain that causes severe damage of the pathways that let us do everything we do. Tyler essentially has to start all over again and try to regain even the smallest of the day to day functions. Things we all take for granted such as eating, talking, walking, using the bathroom...to name a few. The hope and prayer is that with much therapy and just the right combinations of doctors and hard work on his part and the part of his family, he will regain at least some of his functions. He is 11 yrs old now and cognitively about 2 yrs old.
Unfortunately, all of these doctors and therapies are VERY expensive and insurance will not cover it all. He only receives 20 therapies a year from insurance which only takes him from Jan-May each year. The rest of the year is out of pocket expense.
We only recently were blessed to find a neurological specialist in Atlanta, GA that is making huge strides towards re-opening damaged pathways in the brain, and Tyler is the perfect fit for what this doctor works to fix. This doctor is making a lot of progress, but still considered "outside the box" therefore insurance will not cover any of the cost of $5,000 for the doctor himself, or travel and lodging for the week long appointment. We were blessed enough to raise the money for the first appointment back in September and Tyler had more gains from that one appointment than we have seen in the 3 years since he became sick. It was such a blessing and a life changing trip for Tyler. We are hoping to continue his treatment program with Dr. Carrick in Atlanta, but will need to go back every 3 months for a while and each time will be the same $5000 week long appointment. We are trying to raise the funds so that he can keep going and keep regaining functions that he lost from this horrific situation. Even after all that he has been through he is the happiest kid, with the biggest heart. All we want is to give him the most opportunities we can out of this tragedy and get back as much as he can and have as normal of a childhood and life as he can!!
