Being a parent is the greatest pleasure that life has to offer, seeing your child light a room with their smile, talking, playing…just bursting with endless energy…like any normal three year old.
We had no reason to worry, until one day a few months ago.
No one ever expects that in the next instant you are rushing your child to the emergency room, later living in the hospital, watching your child struggle to fight for his life.
My son, Gerald Anthony was admitted into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on January 17, 2017. At home, Gerald Anthony started with slurred speech, his disposition also declined from his normal energetic self to depressed, almost flat affect, loss of motor function, then suddenly, he stopped eating.
Even with the best specialists conducting a series of screenings and tests, the doctors remain puzzled with no clear medical diagnosis.
Gerald Anthony continues to be on a feeding tube and over time, he has started to retain his ability to speak, though still with much difficulty. All this time for nearly two months, his faithful family has been by his side, taking leave from work to care for him.
Fortunately, Gerald Anthony has regained some of his old self, smiling at times in spite of the long exhaustive stay in the hospital.
Even with small yet significant signs of recovery, Gerald Anthony has a long journey ahead. Each day our boy and we as a family find the strength and determination to get better.
Medical expenses continue to grow at an alarming rate, now the co-pay is in the thousands, even with health coverage. The cost for inpatient care, doctors, tests, blood work, therapists, specialists, food, medical supplies, etc. continue to add up.
Gerald Anthony remains in the hospital and each day costs an average of over $3,000 per day to give him the care he needs.
