<div>On November 18 th, 2022, our dear friend Maria Laura Centomo was knocked off a horse while riding a tour in Monument Valley. She could not breathe or move any part of her body. Maria Laura was rushed into surgery for collapsed lungs and then she had to be medically flown to the nearest hospital that was miles away. After many days of inpatient treatment, she was stabilized and eventually managed to walk on her own. However, she sustained a severe pneumothorax, six broken ribs, a femoroacetabular impingement, and a gluteal tendon injury. As the Riding Tour Operator doesn`t have insurance, Maria Laura has to pay for all the medical bills.

<div>At the time, she was finishing her Ph.D. in Medical Oncology as a visiting scholar at the William N. Pennington Cancer Institute, Renown Health (Desert Research Institute) in Reno, Nevada. She was enrolled in a graduate program in Italy, so she wasn`t part of the United States University and therefore unable to get health Insurance. The Italian Insurance she owns has not covered her substantial medical bills. Currently, Maria Laura is doing her best to keep up with the payments, but she still owes $26,000 to the air medical transport. She just started her Postdoctoral fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, and continuing her passion for molecular cancer research and thus helping others. Even today, Maria Laura requires treatment and physical therapy to get better, but she is putting them off because she cannot afford them while living alone and keeping up with monthly medical bill arrangements.

<div>What happened to her is unfair and hinders her ability to live comfortably and successfully do her job in the States.

<div>Il 18 novembre 2022, la nostra amica Maria Laura Centomo ha avuto una bruttissima caduta da cavallo durante un tour nella Monument Valley, negli Stati Uniti. Non respirava e non riusciva a muoversi. È stata portata al pronto soccorso dove l’hanno prima operata d’urgenza per un collasso polmonare e poi trasferita con l` elisoccorso presso l'ospedale più vicino, che si trovava comunque a molti chilometri di distanza. Dopo un lungo ricovero, si è stabilizzata ed è riuscita a riprendere la capacità polmonare e a camminare da sola. Tuttavia, ha subito un grave pneumotorace, fratture scomposte a sei costole, un conflitto femoro acetabolare e una lesione al tendine gluteo.

<div>In quel periodo Maria Laura stava completando il suo ultimo anno di Dottorato di Ricerca in Oncologia Medica negli Stati Uniti, presso il centro tumori “William N. Pennington Cancer Institute, Renown Health” a Reno, in Nevada. Essendo una studentessa iscritta presso l’università Italiana in visita negli Stati Uniti, prima di lasciare l’Italia aveva stipulato una polizza salute con la compagnia assicurativa Allianz, per garantirsi la migliore copertura medica. L'assicurazione italiana, stipulata appositamente per la partenza negli Stati Uniti, non le ha però coperto ingenti spese mediche. Oltretutto, il maneggio che gestiva il “Tour a cavallo” non aveva un` assicurazione e pertanto si è ritrovata a dover pagare tutte le spese mediche.

<div>Maria Laura ha appena iniziato un post-dottorato presso il più grande Ospedale Oncologico degli Stati Uniti “MD Anderson Cancer Center” a Houston. Qui continua con grande passione e dedizione a fare ricerca sui tumori cercando nuove possibili cure per i pazienti oncologici. 
</div>

<div>Durante questo anno ha fatto e continua a fare del suo meglio per pagare tutte le spese mediche, ma tuttavia le resta ancora un grosso debito di 26.000 $ per l’elisoccorso. Ad oggi, necessita di ulteriori cure e fisioterapia per poter star meglio. Tuttavia, è costretta a doverle rimandare perché vivendo sola, e dovendo versare ogni mese una sostanziosa somma per coprire le spese mediche dell’incidente, non può permettersele.

<div>Ciò che le è successo è ingiusto e non le permette di vivere serenamente e di svolgere con successo e tranquillità il suo lavoro negli Stati Uniti.
