13 of my community members have recently perished in a plane crash accident, they are gone but not forgotten. Those who left us included university professors, school kids, grad students, undergrad students, a physician and others. We are asking for donations to help arrange a Memorial servicer here in Edmonton for our beloved community members. Our target is $20,000. Given that the majority of those who perished were students, any excess funds will be donated as a scholarship/grant to post-secondary students in the name of the 13 victims from our city Whether you can make a donation or not, our small community loves you and appreciates your support I am organizing this fundraiser due to my relationship with the perished as well as my involvement with the Iranian community at large. I served as the former president of the Iranian Heritage Society of Edmonton and acted as an active board member for several years before this. During my years involved within the community, I got to meet and encounter many of those that we are hoping to honour. Without the community we've built together, we have nothing. Update from the University of Alberta After deducting Memorial expenses, the rest of the fund will be donated to a newly established endowment fund for the UofA graduate students in the memory of victims of this plane crash. An endowed scholarship requires a minimum amount of $50,000 to establish. The University of Alberta will also be providing a URL and Pledge forms during the memorial day on Sunday for those who would be interested. The funds are invested in the university's endowment pool and the interest earned from the endowment funds the scholarship in perpetuity.
