Last summer I spent 6 weeks living and working in an orphanage in Ghana, West Africa called Joykol Needy home. It is there I developed a passion for helping children and communities around the globe whose basic needs are not being met. We as Americans take so much for granted and should make it a priority to give back what we can.
The children at Joykol Needy home live in an overcrowded schoolhouse. About 80 orphans sleep on the floor of the classrooms. They are joined by another 100 children during the day for school. Staff work 24 hours a day to provide these children with guidance and care, but their tasks are overwhelming because there are so many kids.
This summer, two other volunteers and I will be returning to Ghana to continue our work with these children. Our goal is to give them a chance to succeed in life. This has been an ongoing project for us since we first arrived in Ghana and includes a much larger community. We are working with a non-profit based out of Minneapolis called Worldwide Orphanage Relief Coalition.
During our trip we will be focusing on two separate yet related projects. One is research to get kids better access to health care and education opportunities. The other is direct and immediate relief for orphanages in the region. This includes construction projects and supplying food, clothing, and school supplies.
My goal is to raise 2,500 dollars for our cause. My personal expenses are already covered, so everything you donate will go directly to the children. Being part of a community that has always emphasized giving and helping others has given me the foundation for setting out in this work. With your support, we will be more effective and have more opportunities to help these orphanages, the people who run them, and most importantly, the kids who live in them.
