A Nurse, A Detective, and their Conjoined Twins!

The inspirational story of the nurse, her detective husband, and their two-headed baby!
I have never shared anything personal on social media before, so please forgive me if this is not how it is usually done. This situation is unique in my experience, so I don’t believe any protocol has been established. I have been a medical doctor for over 30 years and this is the strongest witness of Christian faith I have ever seen.
On Saturday May 23, 2020, Michelle (the nurse) and her husband (the detective) scheduled a fetal ultrasound for a gender reveal celebration. Things didn’t go as planned. The ultrasound technician left the room crying. In a weak voice, she had only instructed Michelle to speak with her obstetrician, without giving her any reason why or the gender of the baby. The obstetrician made an appointment for Michelle to have another ultrasound in a larger city with a specialist. It was at that appointment that their lives changed forever.
They learned that their baby was actually two conjoined babies, with two heads, one body, and two legs. The babies also had two hearts, but one of the hearts was not completely developed and was barely beating. Michelle and her husband were told fetal death was imminent and that she should have a D&E immediately.

She was hastily sent to a downtown “Women’s Health Clinic” where the atmosphere was anything but loving or medically professional. Michelle looked at her husband and asked, “Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” To which he replied, “Yeah, let’s get the **** out of here!”
The specialist soon tried to send them to another “Women’s Health Clinic” in another city. This was when Michelle climbed atop her mountain and exercised a mother’s right to choose. She decided to let God decide if her conjoined twins would live, and placed this decision at the feet of the Almighty. Her husband agreed stating, “I’ve taken God to a lot of battles before, and HE has never left me! Why should this be any different?”
Now, two months later, the babies are still alive! Unfortunately, there are a host of health issues, and their ultimate survival still rests in the hands of the Lord. Sometimes, God blesses us in ways we do not expect. If He takes these two babies to heaven, what a blessing it will be for Michelle and her husband to get the opportunity to tell them goodbye, something families often don’t get when losing a loved one.
As you can imagine, those host of health problems do not come cheap. Weekly ultrasounds, fetal MRIs, fetal echocardiograms, specialists, preterm c-section delivery scheduling, consults.... and the list goes on. While the family has health insurance, the insurance company has been reluctant to cover the cost of the ongoing tests and procedures. The hard- working couple, who have three children already, have mounting

bills that, upon delivery, will likely climb out of reach for the family.
Please join me in saying a prayer for the family, and if your heart is moved, and you are able, please consider contributing to Michelle’s GoFundMe page.
Sincerely,
Jeff Beery, MD
