Baby Sophia Medical Fund

Donation protected

I've set up this site in order to try to help a friend and co-worker who is struggling to make ends meet due to medical bills. She is one of the strongest people I know, and would never ask for the help, and so I am going to ask for help for her! She gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Sophia in January. Unfortunetly Sophia has had many medical issues arise since birth, that have caused the medical bills to pile up.

Baby Sophia was born on 01/10/2013 at OHSU. She was immediately admitted to the NICU department, where she spent 7 weeks before being transferred to Salem Hospital for an additional week before being discharged home. After being at home for 2 weeks Sophia was re-admitted to the OHSU PICU for 2.5 weeks.
After extensive testing Sophia was diagnosed with a rare genetic abnormality called 4q Monosomy (she is missing part of her 4th chromosome). Not much is known about this diagnosis due to it being so rare. So far all that they can tell the family is that this is going to cause Sophia to be a slow grower, she has very litle muscle tone, and is unable to even hold up her own head.
In addition to having the genetic defect Sophia has many other medical issues.
1.) Esophageal Dismotility, which makes it too difficult for her to take food orally, so a g-tube had to be placed.
2.)Laryngomalacia (a floppy trachea) which caused extreme stridor and they had to place a trach, even with the trach placement Sophia still requires oxygen.
3.)Cataract in her left eye, they are unsure of how well she can see and may need to undergo surgery for this.
4.)Significant hearing loss in both ears, that is going to require her to be fitted with hearing aids.
5.)Atrial Septal Defect, which is a hole in her heart, that will require surgery at some point.

As you all can imagine, all these different hospitalizations and surgeries are not cheap, and even with insurance the bills have added up. In addition to the hospital bills, there is the cost of renting all the medical equipment required to keep Sophia at home (feeding machine, oxygen tanks, suction equipment for Sophia's trach, all the feeding bags, tubing etc etc), Samantha stayed at the Ronald McDonald House the entire time that Sophia was at OHSU, which in itself is a $980 bill.
We are setting up this site in hopes that we can help take away some of the stress of the medical bills. Every little bit helps, and will go to a good cause.
