310 Miles Film Project

The Story:

Having grown up here, I've always appreciated the north shore values of grit, loyalty, and creativity. These characteristics are paramount for a resilient community. After multiple medical setbacks, I want to prove my own resilience by running the entire Superior Hiking Trail, 310 miles.

I teach at the College of St. Scholastica, where I teach students about how to serve their community.  When I mentioned my desire to run the trail, my appreciation for our culture, and my personal journey into trail running, my college students suggested I do something bigger with the run.

This project is that big idea: To run the trail to get an intimate understanding of our community, to connect with community members, and to produce a film to share my experience with the region and beyond.

The Plan:

1: Run the entire 310 mile Superior Hiking Trail, from
Canada to Wisconsin in 10 days.

2: Connect and engage with the rest of the north shore community through conversation about our shared culture, history, economy, and environment.

3: Share my transformation and experiences in a film, in partnership with Lola Visuals.

The Film:

The film will document my 10-day run along the Superior Hiking Trail, where I will meet the people and see the places that make up our beautiful north shore community.

I will be hosting campfire conversations with some of the area's most knowledgeable scientists, historians, and active community members, to learn how we can find creative solutions to our areas' continually changing economic, environmental, and social structures.

This film will tell a story about our north shore culture: our past, present, and future. Most importantly this will be a story about resilience, and the influences affecting the growth, health, and progress of the north shore.

About Shawna:

Dr. SHAWNA WEAVER //
Shawna is an Instructor at CSS who holds a PhD in Sustainability Education. She will be running the trail and narrating her experience. She grew up in Northern Wisconsin, and frequented the north shore as a kid. She always enjoyed hiking, but picked up train running recently as a therapeutic hobby while recovering from spinal surgeries. She has such a deep respect for our culture, and a deep concern for our future as a community, that she has felt driven to contribute something to the cause of our continued resilience.
