On Monday, April 16, 2018, 3 of the 4 O’Connell gals (Kara, Mary, and Rose) will be taking on the Boston Marathon! Never ones to shy away from a competition, challenge, or the threat of running in below-freezing temperatures, we’ve begun our training fueled by the excitement of Marathon Monday and with visions of that beautiful finish line in mind. We’re thrilled to share this experience as a family both in our running the race and seeing the rest of our family and friends along the course. Running the marathon together is nothing short of a dream come true but representing a cause important to us is an even more fulfilling one.
This year, we will be fundraising for the Thomas William Quinn Memorial Scholarship Fund. We ask you to support this organization to help enrich the lives of other young students like Tommy. Tommy was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor at the age of six and battled through blindness, chemotherapy and weekly visits to the Dana Farber Jimmy Fund for eight years. He was loved by all and fought his diagnosis with courageous faith that a cure would be found. His father, Tom, a Boston firefighter, decided to form a Boston Fire Department team and started running the Boston Marathon to raise awareness and donations for brain tumor research. Tommy’s untimely death, at the young age of fourteen, changed the lives of all those close to him forever. We are determined to uphold Tommy’s legacy by honoring a Boston Firefighter’s daughter or son who possesses the qualities that Tommy had: perseverance, integrity, leadership and volunteerism.
Together with the Boston Fire Department team, we will be hitting the pavement to run in memory of Tommy. We are writing to you in hopes that you can help us reach our combined fundraising goal of $5000. With your help, we are confident that we can reach and, hopefully, exceed this goal. Any donation, large or small, will be greatly appreciated.
Additionally, we will be hosting a fundraising event sometime this spring. Be sure to look out for more information soon! It would be amazing to see you there in support of our run and the Thomas William Quinn Memorial Scholarship Fund. Thank you for your support and encouragement.
