Helping Families Affected By Covid-19

The Covid-19 pandemic is by far one of the worst catastrophes to strike our society in a generation. We cant turn on the news without seeing skyrocketing numbers of infections and deaths; we're bombarded with images of portable morgues and countless body bags holding the ever increasing number of victims; we see mile long food lines resembling scenes from the great depression of the 1920s and 30s; growing numbers of families now homeless, or on the verge of becoming so. Not to mention the record setting numbers of unemployment. And with more than 900,000 recorded infections, over 12,000 deaths and roughly 8,000 hospitalizations Los Angeles County is one of the hardest hit areas in the country. It goes without saying that the pandemic we never expected has impacted us in ways we could never have imagined.

Our goal and mission is to help an initial 500 Los Angeles Area families by providing the essentials of food, clothing and shelter that they may have lost access to because of the pandemic, with the hope of helping many more. We are also determined to donate much needed funds and resources to Los Angeles based groups, organizations and food banks that have come under strain during the pandemic, including the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, the World Harvest Food Bank, the LA based chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha and Omega Psi Phi Fraternities Inc., etc., in order to aid them in their continued work in helping Los Angeles families during their time of need.

In providing assistance to affected families our focus is on the most vulnerable sectors of the population, such as seniors and single parent households.

According to the CDC 8 out of 10 Covid-19 deaths in the country are those who are 65yrs old and older. Those between the ages of 65-80yrs of age are 5-8 times as likely to be hospitalized and up to 220 times as likely to die from the virus. This is coupled with the fact that many seniors live alone, like my grandmother; and many have little to no active support.

Many single parent households tend to live paycheck to paycheck and have less access to resources than two parent households, so when something as devastating as the coronavirus strikes it can have insurmountable effects. And we must remember that due to the number of deaths there are many single parent households that were two parent households prior to the pandemic.

Monumental change isn't always a product of big corporations and the super rich, but instead happens because of plenty of everyday people coming together for one common cause and giving what they can. Now is a time greater than any other, and we have the opportunity to help countless families in need.

If you know of any seniors, single parent families and families in general who are located in the Los Angeles area who are in need of assistance please contact us with information. ThankYou!
