My name is Merle Chandler and my team at work are starting this campaign for our co-worker's (and dear friend) family; the Kain family.
Mike, a former kidney transplant recipient, is now experiencing kidney failure after 17 years. Mike and Karen have a large family – seven children with a stay at home mom. Mike and Karen’s four children attend Six Mile Charter Academy.
Mike has been a member of our Middle School math team at Six Mile Charter Academy since 2010. Mike is a dedicated, innovative educator who cares deeply for his students. Mike has developed videos to help his students grasp these concepts. Mike is always excited to do fun and interesting things with his classes by using a combination of technology and cooperative learning. He is teaching 6th grade, then stepped to fill a need in 7th and was really excited to rejoin his 6th grade classes once again before his health took a turn for the worst.
Mike is currently on a leave of absence to deal with the rigors of two surgeries for port access, dialysis and alike. Mike has been placed on the transplant list but will have to undergo dialysis several times a week until a transplant can be secured. Loss of kidney function is a precarious -- potentially fatal-- condition. Once the kidneys fail completely, the treatment options are limited to dialysis or kidney replacement by transplantation. Dialysis cleanses the the body of waste products in the body by use of filter systems and patients undergo treatment generally 3 times a week for several hours. There are two types of dialysis; 1) hemodialysis and 2) peritoneal dialysis. Dialysis is life-saving. Without it, patients whose kidneys no longer function would die relatively quickly due to electrolyte abnormalities and the buildup of toxins in the blood stream.
Donations would be welcomed as soon as possible to defray every day living expenses on greatly reduced income.
