It's 5am in Nicaragua and the happiest dog in Granada is awake and ready for his morning walk. His tail thumping excitedly on the floor, he knows his 2 Mamas will be out of bed and ready to go soon, as it's one of the only times of day they can bare to be outside - dawn and dusk, when the temperature is slightly less than Melt Down hot. He will get 2 long walks to the lake, play with his old friends, sniff the butts of new friends, receive 2 delicious meals and endless cuddles then lazily sleep most of the hot day away. Ahhh...life is good for Olive.
It wasn't always this way.
When Rasa - a Yoga teacher and Thai Bodyworker from New Zealand and her partner Kris - an Animal Lover Extraordinaire from Belgium arrived in Granada they began to volunteer for Granada Animal Outreach - A Charity set up to put an end to the suffering of homeless, abused and neglected dogs by helping them find permanent, loving homes.
Soon they were asked to foster an extremely neglected dog and took him into their apartment along with the 3 kittens they were bottle feeding.
Olive was in bad shape - he had been found in the neighborhood with 2 ropes around his neck, starved close to death with horrible wounds to his forearms.
In spite of the abuse he had suffered at the hands of humans he was so sweet and loving right away that Kris and Rasa knew he would be the first animal they would have to keep. They have loved animals in every country they have traveled but never committed to adopting one as they couldn't bare the thought of leaving it behind as they moved on.
Being adopted by Olive meant the end to their teaching Yoga traveling the world life-style and the beginning of them making their way down to their final destination - New Zealand.
Rasa is struggling (this is Nicaragua - the minimum wage is $1 an hour) to make enough money teaching Yoga to afford even flights for her and Kris, let alone their adorable dog. They both have work lined up in the States and plan to save the money there to travel to New Zealand.
Please help us pay for Olive's medication - for damage he suffered from being starved - and for his flights to keep his family together.
