Haiti on my Mind...Help me Serve!

Donation protected
Twenty-two years ago, fresh from college graduation, I entered the United States Peace Corps in Haiti. It was the summer of 1991 and Haitians were filled with the hope brought by the election of President Aristede. Fast forward a few months as I board a six-person plane bound for the Dominican Republic, fleeing the coup d'etat that ousted Aristede. In a matter of hours, I had lost my Haitian host family, my first love, and my chance to serve the children of Haiti.

Across the years which brought Peace Corps service in Costa Rica, marriage, career, parenthood, divorce, I have remained connected to Haiti from afar. As for many, the 2010 earthquake brought Haiti to the forefront of my mind and for me renewed a desire to return and serve. And now, the opportunity to do so is in front of me!

The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) works closely with Haiti's grassroots Papaye Peasant Movement (MPP) founded in 1973. The 2010 earthquake caused a large number of Haitians to flee Port-au-Prince ovewhelming some rural areas. UUSC is working with MPP to construct eco-villages in Haiti's Central Plateau to help support survivors, create sustainable rural livelihoods, and foster people's control over their own food.

Indeed, it felt like fate when I learned my local congregation was planning a UUSC Haiti service trip for November 2013. From the moment this opportunity came to light, I knew somehow I had to make it happen, and one very important piece fell into place when a dear friend told me about GoFundMe!

I am seeking your support to bring Haiti from the realm of my mind into my heart and hands for a short time. Help me to reconnect in person and finally serve.

Thank you!
