A Haven Amidst Perdition

My name is Sidra Owens and I have been an aspiring writer for most of
my life. Being a person who deeply enjoys literature, poems, and
reading of any kind, if felt that one day I could write a book of my
own. Little did I know, that despite my passion for writing,
successfully completing a manuscript from beginning to end was an
almost unimaginable undertaking. I am guessing that what I need was
the passage of time and gaining more life experiencing to be able to
create dynamic characters and bring them to life. Fortunately, in
less than two years, I have been able to complete four 90,000 word
manuscripts. For some, the writing is the hard part, but for me, it
flowed and characters grew and changed with every passing word.
Now, with four full length novels under my belt, I have finally
arrived at the hard part; which is finding the best way to share these
stories and characters with the world, so that they can love and hate
them, as deeply as I do. Trying to find a literary agent or worse
yet, a publishing company, is an operation in futility and, sometimes
despair, if an author isn’t careful. I have decided to stop the
seeking out others to see value in my work and publish it; instead, I
am going to publish it myself. In doing so, I can reach a wider
audience and maybe open up new readers to my different views on life,
love and society. But in order to self-publish, I need help. Not
wanting to limit myself to publishing in one format or by one company,
I have found a print on demand service that will allow access to
various e-books sellers, marketing assistance, web site creation and
so much more. They require an upfront payment, allowing the writer to
keep all of their royalties. Although, via traditional publishing,
they do all of this without an upfront cut, the author only really
receives 20-25% of the royalties for 100% of the pain-staking, often
agonizing creative process.
I would like to go beyond this antiquated publishing model, and to do so
I need your help. I am trying to raise $1500 to invest into a
print-on-demand publishing service that will help me publish my very first
completed novel, entitled, “A Haven Amidst Perdition.” This is the
story of young girl, growing up in the 1940s south and discovering
unconventional love and a sense of self, despite the weight of racism,
familial abuse and social apathy. By donating, you all can help me
carry on the long held tradition of storytelling, allowing this tale
to be shared and enjoyed by everyone
