Sometimes bad things happen to really good people. This is one of those times. Paul "Mike" Gass is an employee and friend of mine.
Mike came to work for FEMA as a local hire in the aftermath of the EF-5 Tornado that struck Joplin, MO in May of 2011. From day one, Mike showed tremendous dedication to helping his hometown recover and rebuild; he took on every assignment with enthusiasm and professionalism. Mike worked in Applicant Services as a recertification advisor and later as a Direct Housing Specialist. No matter the task, no matter the difficulties, Mike always delivers. Mike is a good friend and has made a significant impact on the many coworkers that have had the privilege to work with him.
Mike became ill last week and went to the doctor here in Joplin. From there they made the decision to life-flight him to St. Louis for more comprehensive diagnosis and treatment. Last night I received an email from Mike. Here's what he had to say:
"Bad news from St. Louis. I met with the liver and hospital team. The tumor is 16cm and is affecting both ingoing and outgoing flow. It's inoperable. They are going to talk to some other specialists about some sort of chemo that might shrink it some. If that isn't feasible, his recommendation is to go home under Hospice care. I'm not eligible for transplant either, this sucks.

Now is the time for his friends and FEMA family to do what we do best, to support others in their time of need. Please consider donating to Mike and his family. The money will go to help cover costs associated with his care and to help offset his lost income.
