AMIGOS Nicaragua Gap Year

Hello to my friends, family, and anyone else who has come across my page! I am a graduating senior at Northside College Prep High School and will be attending the University of St Andrews starting in September 2014. Before college, I am spending a year in Nicaragua volunteering with the AMIGOS de Las Americas gap year program.
AMIGOS is a nonprofit, nongovernmental, nonreligious organization that unites youth from the United States and Latin America to promote leadership, cultural exchange, and community development. As many of you know, in the summer of 2011 I traveled to Boaco, Nicaragua for seven weeks with AMIGOS and have since stayed involved with the organization as a veteran volunteer with the Chicago Urban Chapter training team. As a gap year volunteer, I will be living in Nicaragua for eight months with a host family and working as an intern with a development agency and my host community to carry out sustainable growth and change pertaining to education, poverty, environmental health, community health, and other topics. My role is to work with the community as a catalyst for positive change a through projects chosen and directed by the community, so as to ensure that they truly address issues that are important to them and will continue being developed long after I leave.
AMIGOS has had an enormous positive impact on my life since the day I first became involved and is an integral part of who I am today. I cannot wait to be a part of the the positive impact that AMIGOS and its partner agencies are working for through this gap year program and to see what I can learn from the experience. I am donating eight months of my life to AMIGOS and would really appreciate any donation of any size that you can make to help me have the most positive impact that I can. AMIGOS is a 501(c)(3) organization so all donations are tax deductible.
