Ryleighs Medical Bills

Donation protected
Hello everyone, My name is Nicole Manzolli. I am creating this page for my very close friends Kayleigh and Anthony Goldberg.  They were high school sweethearts and got married October 10, 2014.  Soon after they became first time homeowners.  Kayleigh and Tony welcomed a beautiful baby girl, Ryleigh Ann Goldberg, into the world on May 24, 2016.  Before Ryleigh was born they were informed she had Spina Bifida affecting her lower spine but were not sure the severity until she was born.  Spina Bifida is part of a group of birth defects called neural tube defects. The neural tube is the embryonic structure that eventually develops into the baby's brain and spinal cord and the tissues that enclose them.  They found out when Kayleigh was 18 weeks pregnant and she had specialized neurosurgeon care at Yale New Haven Hospital since then.  Ryleigh went through her first MRI while she was still in utero.

Kayleigh needed to undergo a scheduled cesarean section because natural birth was too dangerous for the baby.  When Ryleigh was born there were two possible outcomes.  One was an immediate surgery if the group of nerves were exposed, the second would be surgery in 4 months if the nerve endings were not exposed. Fortunately, when she was born the nerve endings were enclosed and she was able to wait 4 months for the surgery.  She had her second MRI right before her first surgery on Sept 22.  Ryleigh, at only 4 months, was placed under general anesthesia for this MRI and her first surgery.   The first surgery was to open the sac at the bottom of the spine, test the nerves, and fuse the spine to close the hole.  At her post operation evaluation she was doing great and was discharged the next day.  A day after being home, Kayleigh and Tony noticed fluid leaking from Ryleigh's lower spinal area, they called the neurosurgeon who told them to come back to Yale New Haven Hospital immediately. Ryleigh was admitted that night and was booked an emergency MRI right away.  On Sept 27, Ryleigh had to undergo another surgery where they opened the surgical site again to redo the stiches where spinal fluid pouring out.  They stayed in the hospital for a week until they were sure Ryleigh was doing better.

On October 7 the family was returning for Ryleigh's 1 week post surgery check with the neurosurgeon.  Right before leaving she started leaking fluid again.  Ryleigh was admitted once again and rushed into another emergency MRI.  This MRI showed enlarged ventricles and swelling of the brain.  The next step was for Ryleigh to have a shunt placed into her brain.  It is a device that is inserted in the brain with a tube that diverts the spinal fluid to her belly. They were very hopeful that this would be the last surgery, however, the next day Ryleigh was still leaking fluid.

On October 9 the Doctor had to adjust the setting of the shunt to divert more fluid to hopefully stop the leak. Ryleigh has so much pressure in her head that every time she was touched she would scream in pain.   Now Ryleigh is on antibiotics and many different medications to help her feel better.  She is under close monitoring in the neonatal intensive care unit at Yale New Haven Hospital until future notice.  Ry goes under different testing’s every hour, including daily blood work.

We are in good spirits and very hopeful this will be the last surgery.  Kayleigh and Tony have been unable to work through all of this and the medical bills have climbed over 6 figures.  Any donations will help the family pay for Ryleigh's medical bills and will be greatly appreciated.  Kayleigh and Tony are some of the nicest and most genuine people I have ever met and to watch them go through this is heart breaking.

Thank you in advance for all your love & support though this very difficult time.
