Dear friends and colleagues,
When Kevin and Haruki came home on Friday, May 2, we found our doors unlocked and our laptops and some cash gone. Neither of us has experienced this before, and we are still trying to deal with the situation both materially and emotionally.
Kevin lost some important documents and writings that tons of his time and energy went into. If you know Kevin on the personal level, you know that he's a big-time music lover, and he lost all of his music, too.
If you've ever had your home broken into, you understand how this is making us feel disorienting, uncomfortable, and insecure at our own home.
Both of us know that this isn't the worst thing in the world; we are still highly privileged and there are so many other causes that deserve our money. (For those who don't know us, we are sociology graduate students at Rutgers University.)
Still, we have already been very touched by so many people who have expressed their sympathy and support for us, and we thought, perhaps we could use some help. If this happens to our friends, we will definitely support them.
Any amount of money, from $5 to $50, even $100 would be highly appreciated and be used to offset the cost of new computers, with which we are sure to produce some great scholarly (and non-scholarly) work. Donations will be split in half between us. Please be informed that the website charges approximately 8% fee for every donation. We welcome donation in person or via PayPal; please contact Haruki.
We would also appreciate some good music to be shared with Kevin (though this website doesn't have a feature to collect audio donation). You can hand him a CD, share a USB drive with him, and/or email audio files to him.
We would like this to be an opportunity for community building and cultivating trust among us, rather than a simple charity. So if you can, please help us heal from the incident collectively.
