Thank You for all your support! We appreciate and thank everyone who has contributed to this fund, more importantly for your heart that cares a Chinese scholar who needed help at his most difficult time!
Updates:
1. Huajun regained his freedom since Aug 07. Let's pray for his recovery and the future of this family.
2. There are about 30 people donated, ranging from 20 to 500.
A few donated directly to his jail account, or by cash. The total is a little less than $4000.
3. Expense so far:
a. $1500 consultation fee to a private law firm, which gave us a very helpful initial assessment. (We used public defender later after weighing all the options.)
b. $2500 immigration lawyer's consultation and court appearance fee.
c. Jail expenses ~$1000, phone calls. (No one can call him, only he can call out at a rate of $5/5min domestic, $19/5min international. This is how the jails/running by contractors make money.)
d. $5500 immigration clearance court, which enables him to apply citizenship later.

1. On July 11th, Huajun pleaded guilty to one charge of "accessing a computer without authorization" in a U.S. district court in Milwaukee. He will be sentenced on August 06.
2. Base on the special circumstances, this is resulted from the best effort from all the parties(Public defender, friends and church members etc ).

The primary purpose of this Legal Defense Fund is to support Huajun Zhao to get fair defense counsel. Huajun, previously a research scientist at Medical College of Wisconsin, is being prosecuted by the government. He was originally accused of espionage, but now has been reduced down and indicted for a full complaint and indictment, namely deleting files from a server without authorization. He was also indicted for making materially false statements to a federal agent.
STATEMENT ON HUA-JUN ZHAO DEFENSE FUND
The HUA-JUN ZHAO Defense Fund is established to collect donations for the benefit of Mr. Hua-Jun Zhao's legal defense. Currently, the legal fee for Mr. Zhao's pre-trial representation consist of $30,000 for attorney fees on flat rate basis due on signing the representation agreement and a $13,000 deposit to cover any other related costs such as costs for experts, interpreters, transcription services, etc. If the case goes to trial, there will be additional $60,000 attorney fees on flat rate basis. It means that to start Mr. Zhao's legal defense, Mr. Zhao or his family needs to pay $30,000 immediately. This $30,000 will not be returned no matter how the case progresses. In addition, Mr. Zhao or his family needs to deposit $13,000 to the attorney's trust account and will be used to pay the services of experts, interpreters, etc. If at the end of the case, there is still money remaining on the trust account, it will be returned to Mr. Zhao. If the deposit is used up before the end of the case, Mr. Zhao is still responsible for any unpaid amount.
The Fund will be managed by Nick and Mr. Jack Li who met Mr. Zhao in a Church and will be supervised by Mr. Zhaohui Luo, Attorney at law, who does not know Mr. Zhao personally but has been a friend of Mr. Jack Li's family for many years. Mr. Luo is not associated with the law firm that will represent Mr. Zhao and will not be compensated in relating to Mr. Zhao's defense. The Fund will be distributed directly to Mr. Zhao or his family's account periodically. We will update the total fund raised and distributed every two weeks here together with Mr. Zhao's legal expense information if available. Because of the administrative burden it may bring, we will not be able to return any donated fund if you change your mind about your donation. If at the end of Mr. Zhao's case, the raised fund is more than enough to cover Mr. Zhao's all legal expenses, the remaining fund will be donated to a charity which will be announced here.
We understand you may have many questions and concerns regarding Mr. Hua-Jun Zhao. Unfortunately, we are not in the position to share or disclose any information or opinion on the case. Your contribution will go to help to ensure that Mr. Zhao's individual rights are properly protected and that Mr. Zhao gets competent representation and is afforded due process under the law.
