Critical Dental Care for a 5-Year Old

Kathleen Stoehr is an advocate working with migrant families in Harrisonburg, VA. She is currently working with a five year old boy who is in desperate need of emergency medical services. He is suffering from severe tooth decay, and needs to have all but six teeth extracted. He is also suffering from an abscess in his gum what the dentist fears will quickly spread into his bloodstream if left untreated for much longer. A number of dentists in the community have offered to do his extractions pro bono, but a procedure like this requires Operating Room access as the child will need to be put under general anesthesia. Estimated hospital costs will be between $5,000-$6,000. The child's Medicaid status is in limbo, and his family does not have the means to pay out of pocket for this.
